Phuket Big Buddha, Chalong

4.3
#1 of 747 in Things to do in Phuket
Head up the hillside and stand beneath Phuket Big Buddha, a 45 m (148 ft) statue watching over the surrounding landscape and settlements. Begun only a decade ago as a donation-funded project, the giant structure has come to encapsulate a sense of the spiritual and social character of Phuket. Offering extensive views of the surrounding area--and a peaceful break from the urban bustle--the statue's grounds serve as a popular meeting spot, a revered place of worship, and the endpoint of many hikes. Using our international travel planner, Phuket Town attractions like Phuket Big Buddha can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

A work in progress place, but the view makes it worth the visit. A few monkeys entertains the tourists... The monks will appreciate a donation as they still have a lot to do.  more »

This was our first stop in Phuket and I was honestly half expecting the place to be a disappointment, but it really lived up to the good reviews. The view from up here was like no other that I've seen in any other spots in Phuket. It was beautiful. There is no entry fee, and ladies can borrow one of their sarongs to cover up their legs if they are exposed. One cool thing is you can purchase a little piece of metal piece to write a message on, and hang it on to the temple for it to remain there. Highly recommended!

A must see while on Phuket island. The views from the mountain top (1200 ft / 370 m) are outstanding. Please come dressed appropriately as this is a religious shrine. For men, long pants or modest shorts, skirts for women. No bare shoulders. Note, the shrine is still under construction.

We went there for a day trip. I have to confess that it is a rare experience to witness. As you climb up the stairs to the statue you automatically feel humbled and to participate in a Buddhist ceremony led by a Buddhist monk is just breath taking. You can "buy" donate marble plates, on which you can write something and by doing so you contribute to finishing the temple as it is build completely through donations. Worth a visit or two or three. And just by the way: the view from up there..... wow

The building is quite impressive although it is still under construction. It gives some idea about Buddhism and the place has some special atmosphere. There are really nice views from the hill: you can see Phuket town, islands and more.
