Golestan Palace, Tehran

4.4
#1 of 51 in Museums in Iran
A persuasive testament to the wealth and glory of Qajarian kings, Golestan Palace, also known as "Roseland Palace" features carefully landscaped gardens surrounded by impressive historic buildings. Inspired by the grandness of European palaces, Nasser al-Din Shah started to build this complex on the site of an earlier Safavid-era citadel from the mid-19th century. The complex--which is a listed World Heritage Site--boasts 17 edifices, including residential palaces, halls used for coronations and royal weddings, and museums. See the collections of royal portraits, decorative arts, ethnic costumes, and presents from European royalty. Compare the photographs of court life to pictures of everyday life in 19th century Iran. The highlights include a royal throne of yellow alabaster supported by human and demon figures and the famous hall of mirrors. A visit to Golestan Palace represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Tehran tour planner to plot your vacation.

One of the biggest, the most beautiful, the most impressive palace that I could see. It takes a good half day to all see, observe the decorations of walls, ceilings, go through the stately rooms and museums, stroll among the trees and fountains, and why not stop for a break at the Café!

It's a beautiful palace but to see everything they charge a lot. The admisson fee is 150'000 rials so you can enter the complex. They charge another 150'000 rials for entering the main building. For the other buildings they charge 80'000 rials each. So if you want to see everything it will cost 940'000 rials (about 25$) per person. The palace itself is very nice with all its mirrors and it's an interesting mix of european and persian architecture. If you aren't on a budget trip it's worth to visit.

Where to stay in Tehran

The northern districts of Tehran possess a more suburban, cosmopolitan feel, and a more spacious form, with a number of accommodations geared towards international tourism. Luxury hotels with pools overlooking the parks sit alongside some more basic and humble offerings, usually located on the lesser side streets. The southern districts offer a livelier experience, where guesthouses, hostels, and simple hotels line the confusing bundle of winding streets. Of course, some areas of the south open up a little, and here you'll find a good number of standard and mid-range hotels with varying levels of amenities.
