Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Esfahan

4.7
#2 of 19 in Historic Sites in Esfahan
A true masterpiece of Safavid Iranian architecture designed by a famous poet-architect, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque boasts some of the most impressive tile designs in the country. Visit the mosque to see its exterior use of Esfahan's signature blue and turquoise tiles in intricate patterns. On the inside, marvel at the complexity of harmonious mosaics, elaborate dome designs with cream-colored and deep blue tiles that change nuances during the day. Built in 1602-1619 as a private mosque for the royal court, the edifice stands in contrast to the lavish public mosque nearby. • A small mosque in Naqsh-e Jahan square, opposite the Ali Qapu Palace, Palace where pay input but it is well worth the money. Has no minarets because as it was only attended by women of the monarch of the time was not necessary to have the call for prayers. The interior is valuable and your visit must be done preferably in the evening.

  • One of the most interesting ornaments IMHO was that stalagmite-like structure hanging above your head at the entrance. Another interesting fact: the Lotfollah Mosque had a secret entrance that spanned underneath the Maidan, from the Palace on the opposite side of the square.
  • Just fabulous! You can't find any mosque like that!
  • I'm sure you haven't seen a mosque like this before! Amazing!
  • Just two words to describe it: Awesome and unmissable! The interiors of this Mosque are magnificent and you could be never tired to gaze them. The highest point of persian Islamic architecture.
  • The most beautiful historical place that you can visit in this city!

Where to stay in Esfahan

Esfahan includes a smattering of accommodations that provide variety, if not depth of choice. Along the main Chahar Bagh drag and the streets that lead off it, you'll find a few fairly basic hotels, providing decent rooms in the city center, close to the main attractions and services. Hostels can be found, with dormitory rooms providing particularly good options for budget-conscious travelers who want to be right in the thick of things close to the main square and the bazaar. The most luxurious hotels in town lie further to the south, set in historic buildings overlooking the river.
