Berlin Wall Memorial, Berlin

4.4
#1 of 46 in Historic Sites in Berlin
Touch a piece of history at Berlin Wall Memorial, the central memorial site of German division and reunification. At this open-air exhibit created in 1998, you'll learn why the country and the city were forcibly split for nearly three decades. The memorial incorporates a 60 m (200 ft) stretch of the original Berlin Wall, as well as the remains of several border installations and escape tunnels. At the visitors' center, you can pick up lots of materials detailing how the wall was created in the 1960s and dismantled in 1989. For a good view of the entire memorial grounds, climb up to the observation tower of the adjacent documentation center. Berlin is to be visited with a step back into the past. You have to feel for him in what has been its history and everything he represented the cold war. Not to be missed.

A whole story in a few kilometres remaining wall. Beyond that nothing important except for some photos and information ...

  • Really enjoyed walking around and seeing what is left of the wall and how it was presented. There are informative murals, photos and information points along the way. It's low key and that's a good thing. We didn't go into the museum as we had a small child. After this we went to checkpoint charlie which was the polar opposite, it sucked.
  • We spent a fabulous late summers afternoon here talking about the wall, the war and how different life was back then. There is so little of the old wall left and really so little evidence of how Berlin was split which makes this park so important and special. Lots of grass to sit down on and reflect and you can walk through the park that was no mans land across the road and see the remains of some of the watch towers.
  • Good history. See the film first and get the five brochures from the visitors center to orient yourself. Or just walk through and read the plaques in English and German.
  • A piece of history still remains here. A kind of live experience of how it might have been around the era the wall was built. Historical footage is shown in one of the torned down building's basement. An artistic church has been built in a place where once stood a regular church. About 100 meters of real life wall can be seen with watchtower included.
  • An old strip of Berlin wall preserved with its sentry tower, this is right across the road from the Visitor Center. Only when standing there, looking through the cracks of the cement boundary from East Germany side can one fully grasps the horror that took place here. I rewatched the Bridge of Spies movie while in Berlin, and there was a scene of runners getting shot down by solders across the "Death Strip". This memorial serve as a reminder to never let such horror happen again....

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
