Friday Mosque, Herat

4.2
#3 of 9 in Historic Sites in Afghanistan
Friday Mosque stands out thanks to its colorful, tiled walls, which remain a masterpiece in the art of creating and applying mosaics. Completed in the 15th century, the mosque serves as a major place of worship for the local population, and an interesting tourist site for visiting foreigners. Most visitors gain access through the eastern side of the building, which features a richly detailed facade designed to praise Allah. Dress modestly, remove your shoes at the entrance, and don't forget to ask for permission if you wish to take photos. • Wonderful place that almost blends with the context. Conveys emotion just looking at it. Shame about the lack of security

  • The garden adjoining the Friday mosque is one of the best place to people watch and relax. The mosque itself is gorgeous, and it feels like Iran in many ways.  more »

The main hotels popular with international tourists sit close to the arterial commercial road, which also contains many of the places to eat in the city. Simpler options sit on the side streets of the district, with basic rooms (sometimes shared) and shared restrooms.
